What Is Diagnostic Imaging?
Diagnostic imaging is a subspecialty in medicine that makes use of a variety of equipment and techniques that can produce detailed images of the intricate structures and activities inside your body. These images help doctors make an accurate diagnosis and to treat and/or manage medical conditions
What Are the Imaging Tests Available?
When you come to us for a procedure, the experienced team in each of our imaging centers is dedicated to providing you with the highest quality of care and professionalism for your diagnostic imaging needs. We will guide you every step of the way, from the time you schedule an appointment to the actual screening.
The following imaging services are available at select imaging locations in Turlock:
- Digital mammography - Uses solid-state detectors found in digital cameras, which convert X-rays into electrical signals to produce images of the breast to visualize abnormalities in the breast tissue that can be seen on a computer screen or printed on special films to look like screen-film mammograms.
- MRI - Provides detailed pictures of the inside of the body using strong magnets and radio waves. MRI scanners help doctors examine the brain, spinal cord and nerves as well as muscles, ligaments and tendons to detect, diagnose, treat and monitor diseases.
- X-ray - Uses a small amount of radiation to create images of bones and organs. Medical X-ray scans can help physicians diagnose blocked blood vessels, bone cancer and infections.
- CT Scan - Combines X-rays and computer scans to create images of the body using a motorized X-ray source that rotates around the circular opening of a donut-shaped structure called a gantry. The result is a detailed image that can show problems with soft tissues, organs and bones. CT scans create cross-sectional pictures of your body that help doctors look for fractures, cancers, blood clots, signs of heart disease and internal bleeding.
- Bone Densitometry - Uses low-energy X-rays to scan the lower back, hip or forearm. This helps to diagnose osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and makes them more brittle and susceptible to fracture.
- Nuclear medicine - Uses small amounts of radioactive material to diagnose, evaluate or treat a multitude of diseases, such as heart disease, gastrointestinal/endocrine/ neurological disorders and certain types of cancers.
- Positron emission tomography (PET)/CT scan - Combines PET and CT into one machine. From one single PET/CT scan, your doctor will have information about the structure and function of cells and tissues in your body. Since this diagnostic test is on the cellular level, it can often identify changes that signify early stages of disease. The most common uses of PET/CT scans include detecting cancer, assessing the effectiveness of cancer therapy and studying brain abnormalities. Some patients may be asked for a urine sample for a pregnancy test.
- Ultrasound - Uses sound waves to produce images of the body's interior. One of the most common uses of ultrasound include monitoring the growth and development of the fetus during pregnancy as well as imaging of the heart, blood vessels, eyes, thyroid, brain, breast, abdominal organs, skin and muscles.
